A SmartBoard mini-movie
is a simple (most involve only a click of the mouse), interactive animation
that teachers can download and add to their galleries. From there, the
movies can be inserted into their SMART Notebook presentations. Each
mini-movie is a dynamic Flash file, similar to the same files that are
already included in SMART Notebook's resources.
How
can mini-movies improve my SMARTBoard activities and lessons?
Use mini-movies to
make subjects like geometry and motion come alive. Capture the attention
of learners by using animation to teach standards-based concepts. Draw
on the movies and click the buttons to give students instant feedback!

"Thanks
for these great resources! I teach third grade and these mini
movies are great for explaining concepts to students. I have
been looking for ways to be more effective with the smartboard
and this will help a lot."

The mini-movies
below are included in several student activities
on number properties (associative,
commutatitve, distributive) and number
concepts (integers and absolute value):
Here's
a whole new section dedicated to teaching multiplication with
a SMARTBoard version of the dice game Circles and
Stars. In the classroom version, students roll a
die once to determine the number of circles. They draw the
circles on paper. They then use a second roll of the die to
determine the number of stars to draw inside the circles.
Finally, they write a multiplication expression and product
based on the circles and stars. In the SMARTBoard version,
students come to the board, push the CIRCLES
button for the number of circles and then the STARS
button for the number of stars.
With these domino
doubles, students can write an addition equation horizontally
and then click the button to turn the domino vertically
and write the equation with one number on top of the other.
On the screen
your students will see a domino with no dots on one side.
Above the domino is a number. Using that number, and the
number of dots on the domino, students must figure out the
number of dots on the blank side.
Identify contact/noncontact
forces that affect motion of an object.
Teaching Strategies
Identify
noncontact forces: Begin by asking students
what happens when they throw a baseball in the air.
Ask why the ball does not continue forever. Show the
mini-movie and talk about how gravity and air resistance
affect the flight of the ball.
Combine this movie
with the spinning baseball mini-movie.
The spinning baseball has no labels; teachers can use
it to begin to engage students and spur thought.
